For some time now I have been disturbed by the tone of our public discourse. I recently listened to this Ted Talk by Arthur Brooks. (A Conservative Plea: Let’s Work Together) Mr. Brooks is passionate about eradicating poverty and about the value of responsible capitalism. He maintains that responsible capitalism is about aspiration rather than accumulation. When he first became concerned about issues of poverty be started researching and discovered that starvation has actually declined by 80% over the course of his lifetime and he wanted to discover why. He discovered five causes for that dramatic shift: (1) Globalization, (2) Free Trade, (3) Property Rights, (4) Rule of Law, and (5) Entrepreneurship. Having said that, we still have a long way to go.
